Pottery 1 – 0856CP                          Grades 9 – 12                                          .5 Credits Semester

Pottery 1 is a semester-long entry-level course in which students explore the art of pottery through hand-building techniques, such as pinching, slab rolling, and coil construction methods. Students will create functional clay forms throughout the course, emphasizing designs with additive and subtractive techniques. In addition to learning fundamental techniques of glaze application, firing procedures, and documenting finished work, students will also be exposed to the work of historical and contemporary potters. Through the integration of MA Visual Art Standards and Studio Habits of Mind, students will develop their skills and abilities in critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-reflection. By the end of the semester, students will have developed a strong foundation in pottery techniques and the ability to create their own unique designs.
